JBER, otherwise known as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, is a U.S military facility located within the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska, eight miles south of Eagle River. JBER came into existence when, in 2010, the Elmendorf Air Force Base merged with the United States Army’s Fort Richardson by order of the Defense Department’s Base Closure and Realignment Commission.
The several tenant units to which JBER is currently home include the Alaskan Command, the United States Army Alaska, the Alaskan NORAD Region and several units of the U.S. Air Force.
JBER’s resources and community life revolve around the fact that this is a military base. Since JBER residents share the common armed forces experience, close friendships are easily formed within the community of JBER homes.
The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) maintains an extension center in JBER which is designed to cater to civilian students as well as to the military. Special offerings include the Servicemen’s Opportunity Colleges (SOC) degree programs which are specifically geared to military students and their families.
Other community activities abound and include, among other things, a fitness center, library, crafts and hobby centers and two community centers. Each of these is available to JBER residents. If you expect to be one of them, this website can help you begin your search for JBER Housing.
Alaska winters normally last from September through April, and conditions can at times be severe, with temperatures falling as low as 25 below zero. However, sharing Alaska's weather experience also contributes to a sense of closeness and camaraderie among residents of JBER Homes.
Despite the undeniable weather extremes, Alaska has more than its share of fresh air enthusiasts, and the JBER area is replete with recreational facilities. Nearby Otter Lake offers cabins and campsites which are perfect for a rustic weekend getaway, while the on-base Outdoor Sports Center offers a popular skeet, trap and archery range.
JBER’s Outdoor Adventure Program provides ski trips, dog-sled rides and snowboard lessons at the Hillberg Ski Area. In addition, this program has recently completed construction of a colorful and challenging climbing wall which is popular with those who prefer their adventures indoors.
JBER does not neglect the younger set, with child development centers, pre-school programs and in-home child care easily obtainable. For older children, the many programs offered by the Kennecott Youth Center include free baseball and softball clinics every Saturday. Schooling for JBER children is provided under the auspices of the Anchorage School District.
Medical help is always available in JBER, with medical groups, clinics and a full-service military hospital available to residents.
